First pass round (Vicky Jones)

Today I had Vicky's piece of art to change in some way, the art was really interesting. When I first looked at it, it gave the impression of it relating to pattern and experiment. It had some really good textures in it which stood out really nicely. So, when I had the work I was wondering on how I would change it in some way, as I have been looking at the artist Barbara Kruger and the use of reds and blacks in her work, I wanted to take this element and stick with the pattern theme of Vicky's work but introduce this structured style from Barbara Kruger.
This is what I came up with:
Here is where I started to introduce the patterns.

As there were two pieces of work I wanted to have a play  around on different ways I could position them.

This is how I finally decided to position them.

Meeting with Stephen

Yesterday we had a meeting with Stephen in our curating groups. It was really useful because we have got some really good ideas for the setup of our exhibition next week. He had a read through our proposal and he thought it was a really good because its not a simple idea.
There were a few things that we didn't actually think about that Stephen mentioned, one of these  was the way we pass our artwork to the next person in our group. I thought there wasn't any other way of passing the artwork except from just giving it to the next person but it was really good to see different ways of interacting with each other. We came to the decision that the photo of us swapping work would be where the work is standing up against the wall and the present owner would be walking away from it and the new owner will be bending down to pick it up (this will be the same frame for everyone and every swap in the group).
We then went on to how we are going to display our artwork for the exhibition. Previously, Stephen and Anna mentioned that it would be really good to not actually show the finished pieces of artwork but to actually show the documentation instead. Using that idea Stephen gave us a really interesting idea to work with which was to pack up all of our artwork and place it in boxes and storage facilities as a piece of installation (as if the exhibition is being pulled down and moved to the next place) and present the documentation instead. This would stop the concentration being totally directed towards the final outcome which is the normal process in galleries but the direct it at the journey it has been on.
Dan in our group wanted to do a video in the dark space which will be another interesting element to the exhibition. When presenting the idea to Stephen he said that this would be interesting because it would be the only actual piece of artwork being shown because all the rest are packed up so the viewer cannot see them in detail.
There was another good point that was risen by Stephen and that was that it would be really good to link the process that we are going down to a part in history. Another words, we could find a couple of artists that have worked in the same style as us, passing work around and adapting each others work.
If we are able to take all of these ideas into our exhibition, it should present a good outcome!

Ideas from Proposal Meeting with Anna & Stephen

Vicky String art - (Dark space - the string can be set up in the dark space (multi-coloured string) and lights will be used to light certain areas up), (Ask the woodwork department for X2 pieces of 8x4 wood, after setting up in the dark space  close it off with the wooden panels  There could be holes in the wood so the viewers can see through into the dark space).

Documenting:

  • When documenting we need to decide on what format we want the pictures to be at, eg. the size of the picture (so that they are all the same).
  • If we have time we could video ourselves making the artwork and passing it on, making it into a continuous video.
  • Maybe someone outside the group could take a picture of when we hand over the piece of art to the next person in the group.
  • Could link our art work & research on the 'Chapman Brothers' or any other historical time/artist (use a part of the exhibition space to display it).
  • When the work is passed to the next person, just write a reflection of the other persons work and what your going to do when it is given to you so they can see what you have added.
  • Maybe set up an infinity curve and once a week after each artwork is done we can photograph it professionally.

Rules:

  • We need to set a few rules eg. make a contract saying what we want to happen to our work when passed on (maybe if its a painting you could say they you don't want a certain area to be touched etc. so maybe you could put a bit of tape over those areas so when you peal it off nothing will be ruined).
  • Could have just a 2 hr window for making the artwork so we don't end up thinking about it too much (also we could have 2 solid days for focusing on this project and get all the artwork over and done with).
  • Make sure that there are some set ground rules so that all work is given and swapped around in time.

Exhibition:

  • Maybe where we exhibit our work, around it we could place pictures of the production/process of making it. All needs to be a certain size.
  • INTERESTING - We could have like a rack and put all of our artwork in and display the documentation instead (opposite to an archive).
  • Because we are documenting it via blog we could place a laptop on a table with the browser open.

Audience participation:

  • We could have a whiteboard and people can draw what they feel like when they have experienced the exhibition (after one has drew something, someone else can rub it off and draw on top (if people rub bits off, it needs to be well photographed each time before it is rubbed off)).

Proposal Draft 3

After speaking to other groups and researching more into proposals, we needed to add more information about our exhibition and what we will need in it. This is our changed proposal:

Proposal

Names of Exhibitors and Curators:

Percy Johnson, Dan Hayes, Nick Bryan, Paul O'Dell, Vicky Jones, Vicky Stokes, Angela

Exhibition date:

(Haven't decided yet)

Name of the exhibition:

'Shit Happens'

Aims for the exhibition:

The exhibition 'Shit Happens' will change the teams thought process and ideas. This will be through connecting with different forms of art that they may be unfamiliar with, whether it being installation, paint etc. Each choose's one form that they believe they haven't explored fully and produce a piece of art in response to their chosen theme. Once explored and produced, the art is then passed through the group allowing them to adapt or incorporate their own ideas into it. This could be a big step as the group cannot become attached to the work. During the time of passing around art, there will be minimal conversations as we want the art to speak for itself. 'Shit Happens' is the name of the exhibition, the reason for this is that life brings so many unexpected moments, people come into your life and change it in some way whether it being good or bad. This is mirrored in the act of passing and adapting each team-members work. To capture the relationship between 'Life Changing' and 'Art's uncontrollable adaptions' is what this exhibition will try to bring to its audience.
Space requirements:
We may use the Level 4 exhibition space because we would have the use of the dark room, if that is not available then we could look into using the Level 5 exhibition space.

Equipment needed/materials:

Small lights (to light up pieces of art/text on the wall)

We will keep adding to this up until the deadline for it to be handed in!

Proposal Draft 2

After talking to my group today there was a few spelling mistakes on my draft of the Proposal which I will need to change. Plus, it was mentioned that I could do with adding a section in saying that 'when we produce our work, we cannot become attached because it will be passed around the group and we will not have any input on any additions made'.

This is what the second Proposal looks like:

Tomorrow we will show this draft in our Proposal Seminar to see if we need to change it further!

Proposal Draft 1

Over the weekend I had a go at producing the first draft of the proposal. This is what it says:

The exhibition 'Shit Happens' will change the teams thought process and ideas. This will be through connecting with different forms of art that they may be unfamiliar with, whether it being installation, paint etc. Each choose's one form that they believe they haven't explored fully and produce a piece of art in response to their chosen theme. I will discuss this with my group and post it on our Facebook group to see if there is any major changes needing to be made ready for the Proposal Seminar on Tuesday!

Liverpool Exhibitions

During our Liverpool trip on Thursday, I saw some really interesting ways of displaying and setting up an art space!
One of the ideas what I thought was really good was printing quotes on one of the walls of the exhibition like this: (maybe we could do the same with a short intro essay?)

I thought this was a really good way of connecting with the audience. Plus it would communicate nicely with the artwork that is being displayed.

This is another image I took where information has been placed on the wall of an exhibition:

One of the things that did stand out to me when looking at this was the way it has been lit up. They had a small light just beneath shining on the piece of text. This is a good way of showing importance!

Plus, next to each of the artworks was like a wooden plaque with the artists name and statement on it which gave a really nice professional look.

Meeting with group about proposal

Yesterday some of our group members got together and talked about what we need to do and what needs to be put in our proposal. We have a proposal seminar on Tuesday next week so I am going to do a short draft of a proposal over the weekend and on Monday we can share ideas on how it could be changed or improved ready to show on Tuesday. Unfortunately, some of our group members are away in Barcelona but we have placed the meeting schedule and will also post the proposal on the Facebook group to keep them updated.

Mally Mallinson group discussion

After the talk about what Mally has been involved with and who he has worked along side, we got into our groups and discussed what we want to do in this project.
We talked about a few ideas and one of them was about creating work and then distroying it in some way for the exhibition. Mally said that maybe if we didnt distroy the work but change it in some way it might be better. So we had a think and came up with the idea of each creating a piece that is challenging to us and then swapping work with eachother and then change it in some way. This would go on until everyone in the group has participated in each piece of art. We are thinking of the name 'Shit Happens' because in life people come into our lives and maybe change it in some way (a bit like what we are doing with the pieces of artwork).
Mally also gave the idea of when we make the promotion poster, 1 person should start off with a drawing and then everyone add something to it (just like the paintings).
Also we could write a small introduction/essay on one of the walls of the exhibition but each of us do a section and we can cross bits out and change bits just like the artwork!
So the whole idea is to be able to change eachothers artwork and turn it into something different from the origional idea.

Mally Mallinson

Today Mally Mallinson showed us some of his previous exhibition he has curated and also put his own work in to.
He went through some of his exhibitions from when he was down London, it was really interesting to have an insight on how much work is put in to curate an exhibition.
He also passed around a newspaper that he had put together for one of his exhibitions and it looked really creative and informative at the same time but in an interesting way!
It was funny when he said that there has been some times where he and others have placed their artwork up for exhibiting and the curators have taken it all down a couple of hours before the exhibition and put it back up in a different way and it looked better. Both curating and producing the artwork sounds really interesting but also challenging because you get to work alongside people and see others artwork, but sometimes it may be hard to communicate what you would like to happen.
